The small group curriculum you've rotated through so many times you've lost count.
Every one of them started with real hope. Most of them quietly ended.
The people who stayed know more about their faith than when they started. They still can't reproduce any of it.
(Nobody says that part out loud in an elder meeting.)
Every time discipleship goes on the calendar, you're asking a family for a night they don't have.
So you shrink the ask down to whatever people will actually show up for. And it stays small.
It was never that they're too busy for discipleship. They're too busy for one more church activity.
And that's the only version any of us were ever shown how to offer.

And somewhere between knowing all of it and living any of it, something stops.

There's a calendar. On paper, discipleship is covered.
But almost none of it reproduces. It runs while you run it.
If you were out for a month, the meetings would keep meeting and the disciple‑making would stop.
Training somebody else keeps getting pushed back. The week keeps filling.
It doesn't have to be this way.
A while back I was doing a training for a denomination down in Dallas. About a hundred pastors and church leaders in the room.
I asked how many of them had been to seminary. Nearly every hand went up.
Then I asked a second question. How many had ever had even one class on how to actually make disciples who go on to make disciples in everyday life. Not the theology of it. Not church history. One class on the practice.
Not one hand went up.
Nobody skipped that class. It was never offered.
It's a training gap, not a character flaw. And a gap can be filled.
I know, because that gap was mine.
Years before any of this, an older couple named Johnnie and Ruth discipled Tina and me. No curriculum, no class. They invited us into their life, and it changed everything.
Then I became a pastor at a megachurch and went straight into running programs and events. Six days a week at the building. Not one friend who wasn't a Christian. And I was modeling to my own kids that Christianity was mostly a Sunday thing.
I felt like I was failing. As a pastor and as a father.
I'd had plenty of training. It just wasn't this. We get trained to run churches. Preach, lead meetings, manage programs. Nobody ever sat me down and showed me how to walk one person through their ordinary week and form them into somebody who could do the same for the next one.
What broke it open wasn't a technique. God showed us that he had already built the world, and our lives, with rhythms every one of us is living in already.
It's not about additional. It's about intentional.

Caesar Kalinowski is a father, grandpa, and has been married to his high school sweetheart, Tina, for over 35 years. He is a serial church planter, coach, and the author of several books, including the top-selling The Gospel Primer. He has worked in 30+ countries, training thousands of people in discipleship and mission as a lifestyle.
